This celebratory event will open a week-long exhibition of many of the 67 artists who received grants this year. This granting project\, funded by Vancouver Foundation with support from Vancity and administered by the Carnegie Community Centre\, is unique in that funds of up to $1000 are awarded to individual artists to take their arts practices to the next level. Recipients are selected in a two-stage application process by a volunteer advisory committee made up of dedicated community artists. This year they included Steve Lytton\, Kelty McKerracher\, Jennifer Merasty\, Esther Rausenberg\, Sid Chow Tan\, Bruce Walther\, and Carolyn Wong. Much appreciation goes to them for their thoughtful and supportive contribution. This year’s artists took on projects in a variety of mediums\, including ceramics\, fashion\, photography\, conceptual art\, music\, video\, fabric art and doll making\, and ranged from the creation of new works to getting existing works ready for presentation or promotion. While some have already completed their projects and have satisfied the grant requirement of holding public presentations\, others will be showing their works for the first time at the Gallery Gachet exhibition. According to Jason Bouchard\, Project Coordinator\, this year’s artists have shown a greater spirit of collaboration\, especially in promoting each other’s works. He has also noticed more experimentation and the use of unconventional materials and the willingness to branch out to different local venues for exhibits and performances. We hope you will join us at the DTES Small Arts Grants end-of-year event on the evening of Friday\, May 25th to honour and celebrate this year’s recipients with delicious food\, live entertainment and good company. Come back to the Gallery again between May 25th and June 3rd to spend more time admiring the fabulous creations of our local artists. For more information about the DTES Small Arts Grants\, please check out the website at vancouverfoundationsmallarts.ca You can also reach Jason Bouchard\, Project Coordinator/Curator\, at (778) 879-9843\, or Lara Fitzgerald/Murray Huehn\, Curators/Coordinator at 604 687 2468 \, programming@gachet.org. .

SUMMARY:Gachet Salon
DESCRIPTION:A Night of Interdiscinplinary Performance Sat May 19th Doors: 7.30pm\, Performances: 8pm $10 Cover Charge Gachet Salon Is excited to present the Vancouver launch of Montreal poet Michael Lithgow's new collection of poems Waking in the Treehouse (Cormorant Books\, 2012). Michael lived in Vancouver throughout the 80's and 90's and many of the poems in his new book are set in Vancouver. Joining Michael on the bill for the evening will be Gachet Salon host poet / singer-songwriter Rodney DeCroo\, free music improviser and bassist Torsten Muller\, British folk singer-songwriter Leonard Pennifold\, country singer-songwriter Shiloh Lindsey as well as East Vancouver folk singer-songwriter Christie Rose. [caption id="attachment_3647" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Micheal-Lithgowfor"][/caption] His poetry has appeared in Arc Magazine\, The New Quarterly\, Fiddlehead and CV2. Selections of his work have been included inUndercurrents: New Voices in Canadian Poetry (Cormorant Books\, 2010)\, and Rutting Season (Buffalo Runs Press\, 2009). His first solo collection\, Waking in the Tree House\, was published in Spring 2012 by Cormorant Books. He is a contributing editor at ArtThreat.net and a research associate with the Canadian Alternative Media Archive. Michael is a PhD candidate in the School of Journalism and Communication studying aesthetics and dissent in digital and performance cultures. On "Waking in the Tree House"// Cormorant Books The poems in Michael Lithgow’s first collection carry us on a stream of sensory impressions towards some heightened awareness. In a voice characterized by curiosity\, astonishment\, and candour\, the poet records what passes through him in settings as various as a derelict rooming house\, a hospital room\, a junk shop\, a Cape Breton farmhouse\, the old Jewish Quarter in Cracow\, a Montreal bus during morning rush hour. Lithgow’s poems gravitate towards darker terrain – not at the expense of humour and irony\, but with an energetic interest in the beauty of what time does to things\, and a pleasure in language that searches for meaning a little beyond the bounds of the ordinary. A rescue It started with drinks. And when we tippled past the cages of chickens surprised to see the driver unhitch his truck and drive away\, we were left alone with our consciences. One of them kept screaming as we rattled the cages. We grabbed randomly and quick – two battered birds in a box and ran. The smell was wretched. Surprisingly\, there is cosmic certainty in these things. Saving two lives makes one’s feet lift off wet pavement in a light rain. It’s corny\, but the universe does notice – The rooster grew taller than my waist and chased everyone from the yard. A force. A noisy prize. And finally\, a gift. We left him on a farm. The hen died of foot fungus. But not before she learned to roost\, laid eggs we ate with guilt\, learned her name\, came when called and sometimes took dust baths under the roses – The desire of everything What was the fascination with fire telling us? A crackling in the heads of 11 year olds\, stuffing ping-pong balls with matches\, igniting words written with butane in mud\, on sidewalks\, in sandboxes – watching something alive burn from dead grass. There was a recipe for gunpowder – kitchen alchemy\, with sulfur scraped from match-tips\, burnt wood\, sugar and saltpeter in a bowl\, moving the metal spoons slowly. I loved that my fingers could snap ghosts from almost anything\, that liquids burned\, that we could burn and watch our fingers in flames like Johnny Torch – flame on! before burying our hands in the sand. I loved that we could reach past ourselves with gestures as sublime and ridiculous as we were\, that we held a key to a beautiful secret. I liked it more than smallness and boredom\, more than my room\, more than my paper route. A lot more than my paper route. More than discovering a world of exhaustion\, of people who spelled magic wrong – I mean\, who spelled it in a way that didn’t spell the desire of everything (almost everything) to burn\, burn\, burn. Rodney DeCroo Vancouver based singer-songwriter and poet by way of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. He has released six critically acclaimed cds and tours regularly throughout Canada and the US. He'll be performing songs and poems from his most recent album Allegheny which is being transformed into a live multi-media theatrical production set to premiere in February 2013. In a recent review in the Georgia Straight Mike Usinger wrote: "Raw\, captivating\, and essential\, Allegheny rebrands DeCroo as an artist determined to challenge himself and his fans. In doing so\, he’s produced what will be remembered as one of the best\, most unflinchingly honest records of the year. If the singer\, poet\, or whatever you want to call him somehow isn’t on your radar yet\, this is where you really need to ask yourself why. Allegheny is a flat-out devastating record." His second book of poems "Allegheny\, B.C." will be released in 2012 by Nightwood Editions. Torsten Muller Free music / jazz improviser bassist who has performed concerts all over the world with a diverse array of gifted improvisers including Evan Parker\, John Russell\, Jon Rose\, Joelle Leander\, John Zorn\, Arto Lindsay\, Lol Coxhill\, Alexander Schlippenbach and Paul Lovens among many others. Torsten regularly performs at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and is co-curator of the annual TIme Flies Improvised Music Festival. Shiloh Lindsey Hailed as "The Whiskey Sipping Darling of the Vancouver Country Scene" she pours her heart out via her own brand of alt-country music. After five years since the release of her stunning alt-country debut\, For My Smoke (produced by John Macarthur Ellis - Be Good Tanyas\, Dustin Bentall)\, Shiloh released her second album Western Violence and Brief Sensuality in 2010 to highly positive reviews. Her music is for somewhere between that after-hours moment in the dimly lit bar when Johnny Cash comes on the jukebox for the last time\, and that instant when the sun first starts to turn the sky from darkness to dawn. Leonard Pennifold Was born in Brentwood Essex England. He started writing songs at the age of fifteen & has been obsessed with that activity since. Although he has mainly played solo acoustic\, there were various rock'n roll bands\, most notably Raw Venus a punk'n roll band\, in Toronto. He merges folk\, rock'n roll\, punk\, pop etc & other idioms. Christie Rose Is a Vancouver songwriter and artist. Since settling in the Lower Mainland in 2005\, she's been performing locally\, finding her place within the community of artists and musicians rooted in East Vancouver. A recent review from theindiejam.com describes her songs as "authentic"\, and her sound as "mature and elegant\, yet powerful\, and containing some unmistakable wisdom." Christie is currently at work writing a new set of material\, with a heavy influence of country\, blues\, and folk music. These songs are lyrically driven\, aiming for honesty and poetry\, and finding the melody on which to hang the words."

SUMMARY:Secret Mechanisms | Brigitta Kocsis & Unfortunate Creatures | Kevin Friedrich
DESCRIPTION:Secret Mechanisms | Brigitta Kocsis & Unfortunate Creatures | Kevin Friedrich April 27th\, 2012 – May 20th\, 2012
Opening: Fri April 27th\, 7 - 10pm Artist talk: Sat April 28th\, 4pm\, in conjunction with the Vancouver Gallery Hop (www.canadianart.ca/galleryhop) Gallery Gachet is delighted to present the solo works of Brigitta Kocsis and Kevin Friedrich. Both artists communicate a sense of modern-day anxiety within our cultural framework. Secret Mechanisms depicts a series of characters created with multi-part anatomical and technological allusions; like dysfunctional poetic super-heroes in a contemporary comic strip. Friedrich’s body of work takes a slightly dark\, yet humorous look at the human condition in response to over-mechanization and fast-obscelescence. [caption id="attachment_3555" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Brigitta Kocsis Sand Dwellers"][/caption] Brigitta Kocsis's art explores the space between figuration and abstraction; the focus is on investigating the shifting concepts of the human body and its environment. The graphic images are painted in a layered\, collage-like style combined with painterly expressions. Contemporary discoveries in anatomical technologies have profoundly changed how one perceives the human body. Secret Mechanisms explores how technology can alter perception by interacting with the methods and processes involved in how the human body works. In Kocsis’ work\, a series of characters is created with a specific “trade” or “trait” assigned to each character. These figures are like actors and depict a kind of repulsive contemporary beauty where science fiction and artificial body parts are no longer fiction. The tension contained within the bodies of the characters due to the pervasive technologies communicates a sense of contemporary environment in its fractured state. [caption id="attachment_3556" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Kevin Friedrich\, Untitled"][/caption] Friedrich's body of work\, Unfortunate Creatures: under-planned\, over-painted\, moves away from the over-planned process of creation and shifts towards the immediacy of gut impulses which\, in Friedrich's mind\, offer up an inherently fresh and honest visual statement. Elements of prairie life arise with images such as soft landscapes juxtaposed against clumsy\, inefficient machines. This reflection of the human condition showcases human vulnerability and perpetual anxieties and often direct ones thoughts inwards. Through distance and life experience his ‘neat little package’ understanding of the world has evolved. Life’s balance of contrasts are seen in the paradoxes of construction vs. dilapidation\, growth vs. deterioration and low tech vs. high tech. A detectable line of progression is not present and instead there is a mish-mash of art history\, placement and displacement. Brigitta Kocsis was born in Hungary. She moved to the UK and learned English in Brixton and after two years there\, relocated to Montreal to pursue her education at Concordia University Fine Arts. In 2005\, she received her BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and since 1994 lives and works in Vancouver\, BC. She is a recipient of a Canada Council Assistance to Visual Artists - Project Grant in 2010 and spent 5 months researching and creating in Paris and Berlin. She has also received a Canada Council Assistance to Visual Artists - Travel Grant and just returned from Geneva\, Switzerland where she was invited to participate in the MAC-11 Geneva Art Biennale. Brigitta Kocsis http://www.b--k.ca/ Kevin Friedrich was born in Meadowlake Saskatchewan and attended his first 2 years of art school at Red Deer College before completing his BFA in painting at the U of M and making his permanent home in Winnipeg. Kevin's work has been described as 'Prairie Surrealism' and includes an evolving repertoire of personal symbols and styles. Through many stylistic avenues\, such as folk and absurdist\, his paintings give rise to charismatically inconclusive statements that are engaging and highly thought provoking. Kevin Friedrich http://www.kevinfriedrich.ca Made possible through the generous support of the City of Winnipeg through the Winnipeg Arts Council\, and the Manitoba Arts Council.

SUMMARY: A Room of One's Own
DESCRIPTION:Showcased in the "Salon Shop"...

A Room of One's Own featuring artworks by Bernadine Fox\, Cherise Clarke and Youngshin Lee April 27th – May 20th\, 2012

Opening reception: Fri April 27th\, 7 - 10pm [caption id="attachment_3573" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Bernadine Fox\, Silver-Lining-Think"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_3575" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Cherise Clarke\, The Long Good Bye"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_3598" align="alignnone" width="136" caption="Younshin Lee\, Untitled"][/caption] Gallery Gachet is proud to present works from the Gachet member catalogues of Bernadine Fox\, Youngshin Lee and Cherise Clarke. These womyn have been and continue to be irreplaceable and integral parts of the Gachet collective organism. We Salute You! Bernadine Fox's work focuses on the complexities of self-expression\, most especially how non-verbal forms of communication reveal the human condition and our sense of identity. (www.bernadinefox.ca). Youngshin Lee is a sculptor who's work in clay is both abstract and figurative\, roughly textured and smooth finished\, and which seems to hint at some greater immutable duality. Cherise Clarke is visual and performing artist who uses art to document and bear witness to the tensions\, ironies and anxieties she experiences living in contemporary society. Salon Shop is an inclusive micro-gallery space located at Gallery Gachet featuring work by Gachet's collective and volunteer members. As art and cultural spaces and resources are seized and disappear\, most artists are being left with limited options. The Salon Shop offers innovative ways to repurpose and share already existing space by defining "a room of our own" specifically for displaying our members' works.

The Salon Shop is Coordinated by collective member\, Ayaz Kamani.

For more information\, please contact Programming Director\, Lara Fitzgerald\, programming@gachet.org or call 604 687 2468

SUMMARY:Drawuary: Don't Not Draw & Art Cart + Salon Shop: drawing room
DESCRIPTION:Franklin St. Studios and Gallery Gachet present Drawuary: Don’t Not Draw Curated by Gabrielle Hill\, Evan Sabourin and Alex Stursberg [caption id="attachment_3450" align="aligncenter" width="312" caption="J Peterson "2""][/caption] March 23rd – April 20th\, 2012 Opening night: Fri March 23rd\, 7 – 10pm This past February\, fourteen local artists from the Franklin St. Studios joined forces for the third annual Drawuary. Each participant had to make one drawing every day for the entire month. This year presented an extra challenge; it’s the first year Drawuary has taken place in a leap year. Given the additional twenty-ninth day\, each artist had to produce their usual twenty-eight drawings plus one\, increasing the grand total of drawings created this year to over four hundred. Curated by Vancouverites Gabrielle Hill\, Evan Sabourin\, and Alex Stursberg\, Drawuary is an exercise in limitations and abundance\, ambitions\, success\, and potential failure. Curator and artist Evan Sabourin explains: “the show works with ideas of discipline and materials\, how much and what is the artist willing to do everyday. The idea is not of a finished product but of the process of daily art-making\, showing the evolution of one’s ideas over a month-long span of time.” While Drawuary focuses on process rather than outcome\, the final exhibition itself promises to be impressive. With fourteen contributing artists and over four hundred artworks\, the show gives scope and space to the massive scale of the project\, speaking to its overarching theme of ambition and artist drives. On a micro level\, each individual drawing highlights aspects of the minute: line\, form\, idea\, detail\, precision. Previously held at the now defunct Red Gate Gallery\, this year Drawuary has found a new home at Gallery Gachet. Many of the artists this year - including Alex Heilbron\, Chloe Gammon\, Kurtis Wilson\, Gabrielle Hill\, Alex Stursberg\, and Evan Sabourin - hail from the Franklin St. Studios\, a loose collective of emerging artists who share a small warehouse in East Vancouver. Franklin St. Studios formed after the closure of the Red Gate Studios at Hastings and Cambie last year due to rapid development and gentrification in the Downtown Eastside. Also participating this year are Chandra Melting Tallow\, Brennan Kelly\, Bracken Hanuse\, Jonny Peterson\, Aaron Rossner\, Morag Kydd\, Jesse Corcoran\, and Drew Mosely. http://gachet.org/ http://drawuary.tumblr.com/ For more information\, please contact curator\, Gabrielle Hill (778) 899-4301. In conjunction with... Art Cart + Salon Shop: drawing room New Works from Gallery Gachet & Oppenheimer Park Curated by Ali Lohan and Ayaz Kamani [caption id="attachment_3451" align="aligncenter" width="307" caption="Ayaz Kamani "Escape of Personalities""][/caption] March 23rd – April 20th\, 2012 The Art Cart Red Ribbon Launch: Friday March 23rd\, 10:30am\, at Oppenheimer Park. Media welcome at 11am. Refreshments served. The Art Cart’s inaugural exhibition\, drawing room will be displayed before Art Cart heads off on its maiden voyage around the city. At 7pm\, celebrate with the Art Cart + Salon Shop artists at Gallery Gachet for drawing room's opening reception "Where's the Drawing Room"? ...It could be everywhere. Life on the gentrification fault line has dislodged keystones in the creative community of the DTES. Space once reserved for art making and sharing has been possessed\, perhaps by demons. However there exists a medium that evades these demons with its simplicity: drawing. It is an accessible\, adaptable and portable form of expression that can be transformed into kindling when warmth supersedes creative posterity. Drawing is simply marks made on something. It is a medium that has survived due to its versatility. For the following month\, Gallery Gachet will pay homage to the resilience of mark making with the Drawuary: Don’t Not Draw Show\, by Franklin St. Studios\, who lost their studio space at Red Gate to rising rents and creeping gentrification. We will also celebrate the launch of the Art Cart + Salon Shop\, as artists from Oppenheimer Park and Gallery Gachet exhibit drawings that speak about artist space and place. Art Cart is a mobile art gallery and vending cart for the communities of Gallery Gachet and Oppenheimer Park. The Art Cart is a vessel for artists to transport and sell their work\, as well as a being a hub for curated exhibitions and projects\, community workshops and public events. Art Cart seeks alternatives for “artist space”\, and in its own way represents an act of creative survival and resistance. Developed in collaboration between Oppenheimer Park and Gallery Gachet\, Art Cart aims to support artist exposure\, creative exchange\, and art sales. Like drawing\, it can be unhinged from convention as it navigates the shifting possibilities for art in the local cultural realm - who makes it\, who shows it\, who sees it and who sells it. Salon Shop is an inclusive micro-gallery space located at Gallery Gachet featuring work by Gachet's collective and volunteer members. As art and cultural spaces and resources are seized and disappear it leaves most artists with limited options. The Salon Shop offers innovative ways to repurpose and share already existing space\, especially in light of Gallery Gachet losing their Powell Street studio space back in 2010 and the looming possibility of the loss of their gallery space at 88 East Cordova at the end of 2012. Art Cart + Salon Shop would like to acknowledge the loss of the many cultural and artist spaces in the Downtown Eastside\, and throughout the city of Vancouver\, that have not survived the growing un-affordability and inaccessibility of artist spaces in our increasingly wealth driven city. The Art Cart project was made possible by the City of Vancouver's Great Beginnings Program and with support from the Community Arts Council of Vancouver. SUMMARY:Faire maine - Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Gachet and Folie/Culture present Faire manie featuring art from the Folie/Culture Workshop Series Exhibition runs: Feb 3rd – March 18th 2012 Opening Reception: Fri Feb 3rd\, 7 - 10pm Quebec's leading mental health and arts centre\, Folie/Culture through artistic creation has been pursuing work of information\, reflection\, and promotion in mental health\, as well as around social questions relating to this sometimes painful reality. Their Faire manie workshop series was designed by the artist\, Josée Landry Sirois as a way for people suffering from mental health problems to express themselves through creating an immense tapestry of obsessions on paper that took the form of drawing\, stamping\, photocopying\, and other media. The Faire manie workshop allowed Folie/Culture to establish their first partnership with the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec\, and to have its inaugural Vancouver showing at Gallery Gachet. Each participant were tasked with graphically filling the landscape of paper with their obsessions and were challenged to replicate the same patterns over and over defining their own language. This automation and repetition of artistic gesture allowed the emergence of a new expression of imagination\, lyrically and visually expressing the idea of mania. The exhibition Faire manie presents the collectiion of works by Blar\, Yacynthe Couture\, Caroline Dion\, Jean Lapointe\, Marie-Dominique Rouleau\, Shental and Sylvestre. Josée Landry-Sirois Josée Landry-Sirois is an emerging artist from Québec City whose art form of preference is drawing. Influenced both by architecture\, urbanism and codified writing\, she puts in her works graphic gestures with great energy where structure and deconstruction live together. Her work has been presented in numerous collective and solo exhibitions across Canada. Faire manie creation workshops The approach of these workshops is unique. Folie/Culture offers to people an experience of creation which is connected to mental health only by its theme. Thus\, no social worker is present\, no therapeutic analysis has its place\, only creation takes place. These workshops are places which allow connection between participants and professional artists. They always take place in locations that stimulate the creation and promote deregulation of social settings. The first workshop was offered at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the second at the Maison des métiers d'art de Québec. Folie/Culture Since 1984\, Folie/Culture has been pursuing through artistic creation a work of information\, reflection\, and promotion in mental health\, as well as around certain social questions related to this painful reality. Their action is characterized by their desire to promote innovative approaches as much in the mental health field as in that of creation. Their objectives lean toward the realization of contemporary art projects and toward promotion and awareness-building in mental health\, most specifically in the encounter between these two aspects of their work. They would like to encourage the work of artists who intervene in the field of social perceptions and to make it known to people who are not necessarily familiar with art. Folie/Culture wants to thank Gallery Gachet\, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and Maison des métiers d’arts de Québec. www.folieculture.org ********************* In the second half of the gallery space\, we are showcasing Collective works from the Gallery Gachet stable. The Gachet Gallery featuring Laurie Marshall\, Leef Evans and W.N. (Bill) Pope Exhibition runs: Fri Feb 3rd – March 18th\, 2012 Opening reception: Fri Feb 3rd\, 7 - 10pm This month's featured artists in our Gachet Gallery are Laurie Marshall\, Leef Evans and W.N. (Bill) Pope. All three long-term members have been with Gallery Gachet for around a decade and through this time they have developed and bloomed into senior\, acclaimed\, non-mainstream artists who are recognized and revered for their individual and unparalleled painting styles. All three have experienced the power of art and creation to heal\, transform and instigate change in their lives. Gallery Gachet is a unique artist-run centre located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Gachet is a collectively-run exhibition and studio space built to empower participants as artists\, administrators and curators. The organization’s cultural services have grown from the operation of a small\, basement studio in downtown Granville South\, offering one exhibition a year in 1993\, to coordinating approximately 3\,000 square feet of public-access arts space with up to 16 exhibitions each year\, in addition to residencies\, workshops\, artist talks\, symposia\, special projects and other events. We strive to provide a focal point for dialogue amongst outsider/dissident artists. Through artistic means\, we aim to demystify and challenge issues related to mental health and social marginalization in order to educate the public and promote social and economic justice. Laurie Marshall is a person marginalized by mental illness\, his diagnosis being chronic depression. He sits down and draws and paints what comes into his mind: people\, animals\, streets\, and rural landscapes. His inner world teems with fanciful animals with human faces and gentle expressions\, botanical marvels\, and a population of round\, dreamy-eyed inner-city inhabitants. Completely self-taught and uninterested in contemporary art theory\, Marshall is what is known as an outsider artist\, an art-world term for someone working outside the established boundaries of mainstream culture. Before painting\, Leef Evan's life was varied and fragmented\, full of ribald tales of debauchery\, scholastics\, sports and mayhem… more congruent than consecutive. The only true constant in his adult life has been the persistent and massive bouts of depression; the last of which put him in hospital some five years ago. When he was discharged he found himself without his apartment\, his car\, or the capacity to interact with friends or family. Evans ended up in an SRO in the Downtown Eastside\, rattling between doctors’ appointments and thin soup. If he had not found the Art Room at the Coast Resource Centre and the Gallery Gachet community and\, subsequently\, the opportunity to paint he cannot conceive of where he might be now. He has since built a successful art practice. Evans has exhibited at various galleries in Vancouver such as Gallery Gachet\, The Gathering Place and Coast. He has been interviewed by Readers Digest and provincial newspapers. Leef Evans "Smithrite" W.N. (Bill) Pope was born in Belleville\, Ontario\, in 1952 into a caring family of various challenges and disabilities. Pope started art training at Quinte Secondary School (Belleville) and later O.C.A.(D.) in Toronto\, where he studied drawing and painting with Gordon Raynor\, Graham Coughtrey\, and multi-media with Denis Pike. He worked and was mentored in photography by Murray Mosher\, Justin Wonnacott and Bob Anderson\, in the 1970’s. Pope sold slide show “Dupes” to the NFB still photo division and he was a founding member of the Gallery 101 collective in Ottawa. Pope entered into treatment for depression\, hypertension\, and alcoholism in 1991 and has worked since then in support of persons with disabilities in the arts. Pope has lived in Vancouver since 2000 and joined Gallery Gachet Collective in 2002. SUMMARY:Gachet Salon
DESCRIPTION:Presenting GACHET SALON An intimate night of multidisciplinary performance Sat Feb 25th 2012 Gallery Gachet | 88 East Cordova Street | Vancouver Doors: 7:30pm; Performances 8:30pm $10 entrance fee Gachet Salon is proud to present a record release concert for Rodney DeCroo's new album Allegheny. The Allegheny features recordings of 8 poems written by Rodney dealing with his early childhood and adolescence in a coal mining town just outside Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. Producer Rob Malowney recorded Rodney reading the poems and then composed and recorded music for each piece. The title is based on the Allegheny river which winds through DeCroo’s childhood home of western Pennsylvania\, merging with the Monongahela River at the heart of Pittsburgh to become the Ohio River: The Allegheny What a filthy river! Lined with steel mills and factories\, to swim in it was to smell for days the oily stink against your skin\, a nausea-twist in your stomach\, uneasy reminder of the river's phlegmy\, dark-green clutch. It was as dangerous as it was dirty. The bottom dug out for gravel\, unnaturally and unevenly deep\, held invisible currents\, eddies\, undertows that could pull\, suck and hold you down until you drowned or throw you up again to limb-flash\, flail and suck for air. Each summer it claimed a child from the cancerous towns along its sides\, as if it were a angry\, wounded god demanding tribute. Each summer we gathered there to fish for monstrous carp and catfish no one would ever eat\, to swim and dunk each other beneath the blinding water\, to watch the rich kids carve into the current white-tipped waves\, bronzed bodies balanced on single skis behind small\, sleek powerboats. By the docks we bobbed in water warm as blood\, the sunlight marching like fire across the oily surface to burn away all but summer's touch. We swam beside the hulk of coal barges black as the bible's curse that tore the earth. All summer we swam in it. What a filthy river! The album will be available that night on 12" vinyl and download cards for downloading from itunes\,etc. Rodney (accompanied by Mark Haney on upright bass) will be performing several poems from the record as well as some new songs. There will also be performances from double bass composer/ performer Mark Haney who will play an avant garde solo double bass composition\, singer-songwriters Doug Andrew and Fraser Mackenzie\, as well as an enthralling and possibly dangerous appearance by the wild child of washtub bass poetry- The Minimalist Jug Band. RODNEY DECROO-BIO Rodney is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter. Born and raised in a small coal mining town just outside of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania he has called Vancouver home for twenty years now. He has released five cds that have received critical acclaim in Canada\, the USA\, and Europe. He's collaborated with artists such as Rae Spoon\, Sam Parton of The Be Good Tanyas\, Carolyn Mark\, Ida Nilsen of Great Aunt Ida\, Buck 65\, Jon Wood\, Linda McCrae and many others. Music critics have called him one of Canada's best folk/ alt-country songwriters. He is also a poet. He has one book Shining Like An Apple On Fire (Burning Cradle Press) to his credit. He will be publishing another collection of poems in the next year. He regularly tours throughout Canada and the US playing clubs\, theatres and festivals. A track from the album Allegheny can be heard online here: rodneydecroo.tumblr.com/post/16787347224 DOUG ANDREWS In a career that began in the Vancouver independent music scene in the early 1980's\, over the years Doug has shared the stage with everyone from the Ramones to Raffi to Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Beginning with bands like Shanghai Dog (2 vinyl releases: 1984's Clanging Bell EP & 1985's This Evolution LP) he has continued to write songs and is today recognized as an accomplished singer-songwriter respected by critics\, peers and music fans across Canada. His latest CD\, A Little Bit of Gasoline\, recorded with his band The Circus In Flames has drawn rave reviews\, being hailed as "Brilliant. 9 out of 10" by Americana UK. It follows The Circus in Flames self-titled debut disc which was described by Dirty Linen as "a strong argument for indie release of the year" in addition to earning four stars from America's All Music Guide. As well\, C.B.C. Radio has nationally broadcasted the band in concert and has consistently aired both CDs on a number of programs. Most recently\, The Circus In Flames joined such artists as former Byrd Chris Hillman\, Blue Rodeo\, Gordon Lightfoot and Jennifer Warnes on The Gift: A Tribute To Ian Tyson released by Stony Plain Records and distributed by Warner Music. The version of the Tyson classic\, Someday Soon\, was chosen by the Toronto Star chose as the Top Track after rating the album 3½ out of 4 Stars. dougandrewmusic.com MARK HANEY Mark is a double bass composer and performer. Last year he released "Aim For the Roses"\, an avante-garde double bass suite that tells the story of forgotten Canadian Daredevil Ken Carter. (Aim for the Roses is a daring record\, there's nothing around now remotely like it."- The Vancouver Province). On May 11 Redshift Music and MARS Quartet will debut Mark's new work "3339: A Hero's Journey". (aimfortheroses.com ) THE MINIMALIST JUG BAND Each new recording by Vancouver’s Al Mader brings him further into the realm of something like popular music. His first CD\, 2003’s For Crying Out Loud\, produced by Chris Houston\, had self-deprecating\, blackly witty poetry set to sparse\, self-taught washtub bass\, with abundant references to a pop-cultural scene that Mader then seemed irreconcilable with. Thrift Stories (2007) saw the addition of banjos\, guitars\, and jug\, with guests like Mader’s performing cohort Petunia and former Red Herring guitarist Steve Nikleva. It was a strangely exuberant affair\, including Mader’s “Dead Man’s Pants” (given added local fame by a novelty-tune rearrangement by the Creaking Planks) and “Raven or Crow”\, which suggests Nick Cave gone rockabilly. Mader’s most recent disc\, Naive Ville\, amps it up even further―it’s his most confident and most musical offering to date\, evoking at times the hobo-jungle equivalent of Black Rider–era Tom Waits\, with Mader’s obsessive plunkings enriched by trumpets\, accordion\, keyboards\, violin\, saw\, whistling\, and guitar\, and songs spanning his trip to Iceland (“Reykjavik”)\, his disenfranchisement from the holiday season (“Let’s Not Bother With Christmas”)\, and statements of faith in human mendacity (“Nobody’s Telling It” and “Never Believe”). Cemeteries are mentioned repeatedly. He's not an easy artist to assimilate or describe\, but a certain stripe of weirdo will love him! FRASER MACKENZIE is a local singer song-writer who's past affiliations have been with The Blue Alarm and Thurston Revival. He is an active volunteer with Gallery Gachet\, sits on the Board of Directors of Grunt Gallery and gratefully utilizes the services of the Mood Disorder Association. He is a co-founder of The Kaleidoscope\, UBC's only peer-led\, peer-support group for individuals with Mental Health and Addiction issues. Recently completing a degree in Psychology\, Fraser works for Coast Mental Health in the capacity of a Community Support Worker. He's very pleased at the opportunity to play his music at Gachet and to share the space with such a diverse collection of talent. SUMMARY:Dissolve/Thrive: An Exercise in Collaborative Interdependence
DESCRIPTION:featuring the work of the Gallery Gachet Collective curated by Rebecca Chunn and Robin Yuen Exhibition runs: December 9th 2011 - January 15th 2012 Opening reception: Fri Dec 9th\, 7 - 8:30pm\, Art Sale + Auction\, 8:30 - 10:30pm At this moment in global history we all inhabit the same paradox: the architecture of urbanization bonds humanity together as a global community while simultaneously disconnects its citizens from the shared ecology of natural laws that sustain life. Our social spaces are filtered through the lens of a capitalist society which ‘naturalizes’ competitive independence over holistic understanding and habitually prioritizes production over people and environment. The growing sense of community dislocation\, ennui with the mundane\, and skepticism of spiritual practice are now common global themes. “Mother Nature” is often depicted as a “victim” of overpopulation in media and politics. Many environmental and social campaigns hope to raise awareness on the urgent need to preserve wilderness for future generations. While these platforms of protest may be necessary and helpful to treat the symptoms of a fundamental imbalance between wo/man and nature\, they tend to focus on the deficit rather than the unity of this interdependent relationship. Often human tendency is to imbue our species with the right to save and destroy life\, when in actuality we are being tenuously supported by ecosystems that thrive with or without us. The social constructions we impose on our everyday interactions perpetuate and affirm a sense of false independence which ignores the reality that we are immediately engaged in a sentient relationship with everything around us. Awakening to the fact we are part of\, not only a biological ecosystem\, but a social one which is shaped by the process of cultural dialogue\, reignites the transformative agency within the individual to re-imagine a social fabric celebratory of commonality rather than numbed by separation. By highlighting sublime connection within the context of the everyday or mundane we personally recalibrate our social lens while creating space to affect positive social change. This exhibit focuses on moments of everyday existence where artists experience a sublime sentient connection to the world around them. As a strategy to bridge the divide we experience in our personal and public relationships on a daily basis this project emphasizes celebrating the joy of connection in both visual and performative mediums. Ultimately it addresses reanimating a sense of the magical in the mundane as a way of addressing how shared experience is a desirable and reasonable alternative to the isolation of individualist being. It begins by asking: what does reaching out for connection look like and how can we re-imagine our social fabric to facilitate community? Gallery Gachet artists were encouraged to engage and inquire into spaces of the everyday where they experience awareness of connection and purpose. Whether personal sketches\, experiments in enlivening the mundane\, or representation of relationship with nature\, the show creates a space for work that observes the profound\, ephemeral and uncanny in lived experience. The objectives of this month-long group show include: * observing sentient relationship with nature in the everyday urban environment * celebration of the joy of connection * participation in cultural dialogue surrounding re-imaging community space and personal connection to the world around us * shifting perception of environmental and social issues from deficiency to acceptance and appreciation For more info\, visit www.gachet.org or email programming@gachet.org or contact Rebecca Chunn and Robin Yuen at chunn.art@gmail.com or rlyuenster@gmail.com

SUMMARY:l'état de folie perçu - the state of perceived folly
DESCRIPTION:l'état de folie perçu - the state of perceived folly a series celebrating the history of performance art at Gachet Curated by Irene Loughlin Performances by: Pedro Guillen Cuevas Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa Diane Jacobs Irene Loughlin* *Irene Loughlin's performance appears thanks to the curated program and sponsorship of LIVE International Performance Art Biennale 2011. Upcoming catalogue release as part of the 88 East Cordova St. project: Sept 2012 "It is not by confining one's neighbour that one is convinced of one's own sanity." Michel Foucault\, quoting Dostoievsky Contemporary confinement is not limited to the recent past of the mental institution or medical facility\, but rather\, to the suppression of difference and the suppression of emotional\, spiritual\, intellectual and physical liberty. The 'natural' separation between conceptualizing reason and madness assumes madness as the unnatural detour\, rather than an impulse towards 'reason' within unreasoned\, systemic abuse. During this moment\, the world endurance of the 'psychotic break' characterized by erupting weather patterns and conflicting zones of economic wealth and degradation may create a push towards learning from the 'unreasoned' approaches of knowledge existing at the border zones of the normative. Performance art has long been situated as such\, its alternate language emerging from systems of lesser value to those of western reason\, with its concurrent emphasis on ephemerality\, endurance\, folkloric practices\, etc. This performance art series wishes to examine these spaces of provocation\, re-examining ideas of confinement and release\, inhabiting an evolving space beyond l'état de folie perçu - the state of perceived folly. Participating artists: Pedro Guillèn Cuevas (aka Tecuani Chen) is a multidisciplinary artist from Veracruz\, Mexico\, who works in the mediums of painting\, drawing\, and performance art. He is inspired by the shamanic tradition of Mexico. He has exhibited in Mexico\, Cuba\, and Canada\, and is currently pursuing an MFA at the University UNCAR of Carmen\, Campeche. Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa (Guatemala City\, 1978) is an interdisciplinary artist\, working in video\, installation\, and performance. His work and research delves into folkloricism\, sexuality\, magical practices\, the welfare of children in war\, the experiences of refugees\, and poetry. He has had various solo exhibitions internationally and is a 2011 fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart\, Germany. Diane Thorn Jacobs explores ideas of sanctuary and fragility\, of building structures that must ultimately collapse. The work will invite viewer participation and will take place over 30 minutes. Born in England in 1969\, she attended Red Deer College and holds a BFA from the University of Calgary. Jacobs’ work usually emerges from internal\, emotional/intuitive sources. Irene Loughlin developed her practice as an artist in Vancouver\, particularly in the historic Downtown Eastside neighbourhood\, where she contributed to the activist and disability community through participation in gallery gachet\, VANDU\, and the Carnegie Centre. Loughlin is the recipient of a 2008 SSHRC Masters Level scholarship and the 2005 Lynch-Staunton Award\, Canada Council for the Arts. Project facilitated by Lara Fitzgerald\, Programming Director\, and the Gallery Gachet Programming Committee. This series is made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts. SUMMARY:FREE ALL | Vasan Sitthiket SWARM Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Gachet\, LIVE 2011\, and Cafe for Contemporary Art presents FREE ALL Vasan Sitthiket takes up residence at Gallery Gachet Sitthiket - bete noire of corrupt Thai politicians\, agent provocateur against capitalism and globalization and\, perhaps contradictorily an artist featured in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection - is coming to Vancouver. Consider yourself warned. Gallery Gachet\, in collaboration with the Cafe for Contemporary Art and LIVE 2011\, presents Sitthiket's Vancouver exhibition\, titled FREE ALL\, running from September 9th to October 2nd. In conjunction with his show\, he will execute a headline performance at the Vancouver Live Biennale and run an informal workshop on art and politics. He arrives in Vancouver for a triple encounter with the city\, its inhabitants and their political\, social and cultural anxieties as the first participant in the Caf_ for Contemporary Art and Gallery Gachet's DTES International Artists-in-Residency Program. Vasan Sitthiket has been called Thailand's "Anarchist artist." Across his thirty-year career in the arts\, he has experimented in different media - puppetry\, performance\, poetry\, and even electoral politics - but he is best known as a provocative\, passionate\, politically engaged painter. At the earliest stages of his career\, he was drawn to the revolutionary critique of the iniquities\, injustice and rampant corruption he discerned at the heart of capitalism\, both in Thailand and around the world. Unrepentant in his radical commitments\, he refers to contemporary democracy as "demon-crazy" and makes no bones of his admiration for Marxist revolutionary leaders. "I admire Mao\, Che Guevara\, Castro\, Ho Chi Minh and Chavez\, because I still need revolution\," Vasan said in a recent interview\, "I don't agree with vulgar\, greedy capitalism\, and I still dream for this world to be as one." The resulting art is daring\, colourful and uncompromising - in a painting on environmental degradation\, he depicts corporate forces as wolves in suits wielding sizeable erections\, and in another he imagines economic stimulus as a daisy chain of bisexual oral copulation. His reaction to 9/11 and the War on Terror was likewise shocking - he prepared paired larger-then-life style icon portraits of Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush\, eliciting shrieks of outrage from the American right. His practice expands his radical critique with the exhibition planned in Vancouver. The title\, FREE ALL\, is as ironic as it is deeply sincere\, he explains "the concept is that there is no where free in this planet\, that we are all imprisoned in the name of the system and the mad media." The pieces displayed\, a series of pen-and-ink bottomless self-portraits\, are his call to arms "there is no way out until we come together and act for change\," an act he describes violently\, "opening everyone's heads and washing all the idiot out\, thereby realizing that we are all one." Vasan Sitthiket is a renowned Thai artist whose works and performances have been showcased internationally in such venues as the 2003 Venice Biennale\, Bangkok Art Gallery\, the National Gallery (Bangkok)\, The Singapore Art Museum and at Biennales in Gwangju\, Sydney and Venice. His works have been acquired for the permanent collections of a number of institutions\, including the MOMA (NY)\, the National Gallery (Bangkok)\, the Singapore Art Museum and the Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane). He has also won a number of awards for his work from bodies in Thailand and India. The show FREE ALL\, running from September 9th to October 2nd\, presents a series of recent works in pen-and-watercolour at Gallery Gachet. Opening reception for FREE ALL: Fri September 9th\, 7pm In conjunction with SWARM: Festival of Artist Run Culture (http://swarm.paarc.ca) Exhibition runs: Sept 9th - Oct 2nd\, 2011. Live Biennale Performance: Sept 24th\, VIVO Media Arts Centre Art and Politics Workshop: check www.gachet.org for full details The DTES International Artist in Residency is an initiative of the Cafe for Contemporary Art and Gallery Gachet to bring the voices and perspectives of international artists to the issues and interests of the Down Town East Side of Vancouver. It is intended that over the years through this ongoing programme numerous internationally exhibiting artists from countries outside of Canada will be welcomed to the DTES for the production\, exercise and presentation of all manner of contemporary art practice. SUMMARY:Mad Poets Anti-Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:The Mad Poets’ Society and West Coast Mental Health Network present THE MAD POETS’ ANTI-CABARET hosted by CJSF’s\, J Peachy (soundtherapyradio.com) International Mad Pride Day 2011 8pm – late\, gallerygachet As part of Mad Pride 2011: REdisCover\, the Mad Poets’ Anti-cabaret will take place at Gallery Gachet on international Mad Pride Day\, Thurs July 14th. This open mic format event features poets\, visionaries\, singers\, strummers and hummers with something to get off their chests and who are in the mood to celebrate our human bio-diversity and unparalleled tenacity in the face of persistent challenges and set backs. Mad Pride is a global\, grassroots movement that celebrates and reclaims the term\, MAD and advocates for the de-stigmatization of mental illness. This year our Mad Pride theme embraces and jostles with ideas around “modes of recovery”. The gallery is facing major financial cut backs this year and with practically no money to run programming\, we are recovering in our usual mad and crazy way – with a non-exhibit\, anti-cabaret and comedy for our Mad Pride celebrations. We are defying the usual parameters and breaking new ground in the face of “zero dollars.” Performances at this crazy cabaret include music by Fraser MacKenzie\, Cassandra Freeman\, Rose Ananda Heart and Avy Crowchild; words by Kagan Goh\, Bruce Ray\, Patrick Connors\, and Miroslav Vlcek; visuals by Pierre Leichner and Robert Gardiner; and laughs by J Peachy (we hope!). More surprise guest performers are bound to be revealed upon the night. We are very excited to announce a special debut presentation of Biopoieses: a self-organizing computational device that harnesses electrochemical reactions by artist team\, Steven J. Barnes\, a neuroscientist\, and Carlos Castellanos\, an interdisciplinary artist and researcher. They invite people to interact with their installation by bringing down your electronic equipment and tapping into their set up. Your sounds will be included in their feedback loops and you can become a part of experimental energy wave patterning. You have to come just to experience this phenomenon; you may not understand it but it will blow your mind. We aim to live stream the event on uStream…so tune in if you can’t make it down in person. Don’t forget to add your photo to our Face Your Mind campaign wall. Send us a photo to programming@gachet.org giving us your permission to use your photo in our gallery and online. Or take your photo at our laptop photo-booth station and we will integrate you into our wall display. Come ‘out’ and reveal your love of mental illness! SUMMARY:Mad Pride 2011: Face Your Mind Campaign
DESCRIPTION:FACE YOUR MIND Join Gallery Gachet in our Mad Pride campaign to end the stigmatization of mental illness and help raise awareness around mental health Mad Pride is a global\, social change movement initiated by psychiatric survivors in England in the 1970s. Each year on July 14th\, International Mad Pride Day is recognized around the world as a day of celebration of our collective mental diversity. In Vancouver\, Mad Pride has been officially celebrated by Gallery Gachet for the past 4 years. As an artist-run centre operated by and for those who speak to experiences with mental illness\, Gachet has played an essential role in cultivating and contributing to dialogue around all matters 'mental health'. We continue to engage with our local communities on the intersection between mental health and the arts both within and beyond our home in the Downtown Eastside. We struggle and survive despite deep provincial funding cuts to both the arts and mental health sectors this year\, and we are calling upon our communities for financial support and to participate in our campaign to raise awareness of mental health issues. This summer\, Gallery Gachet proudly presents Face Your Mind: we are calling out to all consumers\, supporters and allies to help us build a wall of portraits signifying your support for the de-stigmatization of mental illness. You can participate simply by sending us your "photobooth or head shot image" and we will place your portrait within our gallery wall display. By doing so\, you are visibly demonstrating your support for a global movement which recognizes that matters of mental health affect each and every one of us. With your permission we will add you to our Flickr photo group and potentially project your image within a collection around Vancouver. You don’t have to have a “mental health issue” or illness to be supporter. Face your own mind and support everyones. Donating to our Face Your Mind campaign will enable us to support the work of artists who identify with mental health issues and who are participating in our Mad Pride exhibition. Your dollar will go directly into the pockets of those struggling with mental illness and in support of our gallery\, as we face the challenge of surviving through an increasingly impoverished arts and mental health funding climate. Our presence within these communities is crucial and we cannot continue to produce our exhibitions and programming initiatives without your help. Please give what you can afford\, even if it’s just a photo. HOW TO HELP Photos can be e-mailed to programming@gachet.org\, along with an e-mail giving us your permission to use your image in our Face Your Mind Campaign. Donations can be made through Pay Pal via credit card\, through our website\, www.gachet.org\, or by check or cash at our location at 88 East Cordova Street. Please call 604 687 2468 and let us know you wish to donate to our “Face Your Mind Campaign”. We thank you for your support and contributions. In July\, our month of Mad Pride related programming includes the Mad Pride art exhibition: REdisCover\, an interdisciplinary cabaret sponsored by the West Coast Mental Health Network\, comedy nights and a special workshop. Please check out our exhibition section for a full programing run down.

SUMMARY:In our Backyard: Youth Homelessness PhotoVoice & Art Project Presents
DESCRIPTION:Realities\, Solutions & Opportunity for Community Dialogue on Youth Homelessness (Photo credit: Raven Whitehead) Youth who participated in the city’s first ever targeted count of homeless youth as part of the Metro Vancouver Homeless Count 2011 are presenting their stories of homelessness here in our backyard in a PhotoVoice & Art Project Exhibition hosted by the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy (GVSS) to highlight critical regional issues around youth homelessness. In Our Backyard is a photo storytelling series and art exhibition which runs Wednesday May 4th & Thursday May 5th (12pm –6pm)\, Friday May 6th (12pm –10pm) with an Artists talk by the youth from 730pm-930pm and Saturday\, May 7th from 12pm – 4pm with a film screening from 2pm-3pm. The exhibition is being held at Gallery Gachet (88 Cordova Street East\, Vancouver). Admission is by donation. Seventy percent of all proceeds from donations and sales of the photos go to participating members of the GVSS Youth Action Squad\, with the remainder covering costs of the exhibition itself. While Canada has yet to obtain accurate statistics on the actual number of homeless\, the nation wide population is estimated to be close to 300\, 000\, with an estimated population of 150\,000 street-involved youth on any given day in this country. In our Backyard showcases photos taken and art work created by seven youth participants\, each member part of a team who identify themselves as the GVSS Youth Action Squad (YAS) and have all experienced homelessness within the Greater Vancouver region. As part of the Homeless Voices/Call to Action Project 2011\, the YAS which the youth have been involved in for the past 5 months has served as a foundation for these young people to find a voice in their community by sharing their stories and solutions to ending youth homelessness throughout the region. “Got me to stay out the street life…Made me realize that I am capable of anything” – Youth Participant #1 “I acquired public speaking skills\, interaction skills and also a newfound knowledge regarding homelessness” – Youth Participant #2 “Thankful for what I have” – Youth Participant #3 “I now know that couch surfing is not a home...I feel that I have made a difference with my participation.” – Youth Participant #4 The YAS Team is part of the Homeless Voices 2011 Project initiated by the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy (GVSS)\, a ground-breaking regional network of organizations responding together since 1998 to meet the needs of people who are homeless or at risk (formerly known as the Lower Mainland Cold/Wet Weather Strategy). GVSS members are organizations actively involved in meeting emergency shelter needs: providing\, funding\, or otherwise actively involved with shelter services. A list of GVSS membership and additional information on the GVSS can be found on their website at: http://www.gvss.ca. The project has been generously supported by Coast Capital Savings and the United Way of the Lower Mainland. SUMMARY:Baby Dee Performance
DESCRIPTION:Baby Dee Tues April 27th ♦ 8pm-late ♦ Gallery Gachet ♦ (www.gachet.org) ♦ 88 East Cordova Street ♦ Tickets:$16 advance and $20 at the door. Purchase tickets here: http://gachetpresentsbabydee.eventbrite.com/ or available at Little Sisters\, BeckWoman's and Zulu Records. ♦ Baby Dee\, New York based singer-songwriter and former Coney Island sideshow performer\, plays an intimate Vancouver setting for the release of her new album\, A Book of Songs for Anne Marie\, with special guest Leonard Pennifold. This is probably the last opportunity to see Baby Dee in such a small\, intimate venue! Dee is a performance artist\, classically trained harpist\, church organist\, circus sideshow veteran\, and transgender street legend. After the overwhelming response to Safe Inside the Day in February 2008\, the unique Baby Dee returns with Book of Songs for Anne Marie. It will be released by UK indie-of-repute Tin Angel (home to a wide ranging roster that includes Devon Sproule and Polar Bear) and Drag City in the US. Baby Dee gives everything and that is what connects her with critics and audience alike. While the last album was helped along by Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney producing\, this one was led by the calming presence of Maxim Moston (part of Antony and the Johnson's touring band and a song arranger). Moston says “She sent me the demo and I was floored – here was a true collection of lieder\, or art songs” What Moston envisaged in his words were “song cycles performed in their entirety and stripped of all excess\, just piano and voice\, poetry and melody”. Gone are the more bawdy ruminations to be replaced by a glowing heart of a record. Hermetically sealed and lovingly passed on so that we can understand what love could mean from Dee’s perspective. It is at times jaw-dropping in its profundity. Book of Songs can be seen as a prequel to Safe Inside the Day in so much as it was issued in book form (with bonus disc) in 2004 on David Tibet’s Durtro label. It was limited to 150 copies and has been out of print for years. Essentially\, this is its first outing. The reason to make the record in the first place was borne out of love\, and the reason to re-visit the record also came from that same scary yet beautiful place. What makes Dee indefatigable and the record so majestic is upturning any suggestion of there being limitations to love. From lines like: “Set as a seal on your heart\, As a seal on your arm/For love is stronger than death” to the barest simplicity of being able to say to someone\, “Like a baby first time talking/Here I am\, It's me\, I'm here”. Baby Dee’s vulnerability and insight is inspirational. So why not leave as 150 little books and move along? After all the ‘and yets’\, Dee was actually “struck dumb” with love and thus was compelled to share this record with the world. “Everybody has a right – the right to really be the lover\, to really be the beloved. Regardless of how fucked up and inadequate we are or how short our time is together. We never lose that opportunity” – Baby Dee 2009 Don't miss this incredible opportunity to see Baby Dee perform live in a small venue. Hurry\, tickets are sure to sell out. SUMMARY:The Street Corner Relaunch Party
DESCRIPTION:The Street Corner re-launch party is happening on April 4th at Gallery Gachet (88 E. Cordova) where we will unveil our new magazine: Megaphone. There will be a silent auction (with one or two pieces going for a live auction). The work will be up from Wednesday April 2nd to Friday April 4th. The event is free to attend if you are a participating artist. We will be asking for a $10 donation at the door for others. Submission Guidelines: -Max 4 submissions per artist -No size restrictions (within reason) -The theme for the first re-launched issue is 'home' so anything related to that is great. -Other topics of interest are mainly the same as those that are dealt with in the paper; homelessness\, poverty\, prostitution\, The Downtown Eastside and Vancouver in general. -Also keep in mind that the work is meant to sell so work that carries a message of hope and possibility rather than tragedy and pain will probably do better. A slightly more positive angle on the work also better reflects what Megaphone is all about. Street Corner does not cover printing or production costs up front\, but the artist will get 50% of the selling price. If the work does not sell it will be returned to you in the condition it arrived in. The artist will be asked to provide the minimum/starting bid price. Please drop off your artwork at Gallery Gachet\, 88 East Cordova Street anytime Wed-Sunday 12-6\, or by appointment Monday-Friday mornings 604-687-2468 - work will be accepted from March 19 until April 1. There will be a submission form for you to fill out when you deliver your work.
