Featuring artists Cameron Carr, Grace Chan, Rosa Chan, Donna Jean Charlie, Eva Cho, James Diamond, Leon Duane Goulet, Serena Guan, Lily H, Fanny Ip, Montana King, May Li, Masha Tik, Elder Les Nelson, Theresa Ng, Immacula Renaud, Rosie Lan, Edgar Rossetti, Sue, Lawrence Tung, Jin Wang, Kam Yuk Wong, Yiqi Yang, and Swallow Zhou.
The Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show highlights artwork and insight from artists and community leaders connected to or displaced from Oppenheimer Park — the green space known as Lek'lekí, the Powell Street Grounds, Paureu gai, the backyard of the Downtown Eastside; the unceded land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. For some artists, the show has become an annual tradition; others are contributing for the first time. Submissions were reviewed by a community jury panel.
From the start, the project has taken shape through open-air, studio-style workshops in one of the hearts of the Downtown Eastside: Oppenheimer Park, joined in recent summers by Pigeon Park. Tables go up outdoors, materials are free, and anyone can sit down. Many of the works here began at those tables; others were made elsewhere, by artists connected to the parks and the neighbourhood around them. Across all of it, the Gachet team draws on the parks' communal nature to hold open a space for creative exploration and collective expression in times marked by uncertainty and precarity.
