afterlives and entanglements

Opening Reception: October 15, 6–8pm
Location: Gallery Gachet, 9 W Hastings Street
Exhibition Dates: October 15–24, 2026

Gallery Gachet is pleased to present afterlives and entanglements, bringing together the work of Rain Cabana-Boucher, Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, and Gloria Wong.

“What we might identify as residual within the histories of settler or colonial capitalism does not disappear. To the contrary, it persists and endures, even if less legible within the obfuscations of a new dominant.”
— Lisa Lowe, The Intimacies of Four Continents

afterlives and entanglements congeals three self-directed artistic practices around inquiries into the substance of memory, inheritance, sovereignty, and belonging. Presenting primarily works in progress, the exhibition emerges from each artist’s sustained research and attention to the collapse of personal and political histories that precede, surround, and exceed them.

Here, the afterlife names not simply what comes after, but the structures, images, languages, materials, and feelings that persist from a past that is not past into the present world as we know it. Across distinct Indigenous, Black, and diasporic Asian positionalities, Cabana-Boucher, Obuwoma, and Wong approach these questions through technology and Indigenous ways of making, the bureaucratic architecture of colonial rule, and the translation of sovereignty across diasporic and matrilineal generations.

Their proximity proposes no equivalence; instead, difference is held intact as each particular history and way of knowing touches, intersects, and pulls apart. What possibilities might be wrested from such an existence? What remains withheld? How might we form a sense of self, solidarity, and new ways of being in this world, within and outside of that which haunts, persists, holds, and takes away?

The exhibition runs October 15–24, 2026.
