Gallery Gachet is a unique artist-run centre in Vancouver’s arts landscape, committed to a multi-faceted approach to programming and community engagement. We serve residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES), artists and art professionals, people living with disabilities, people of colour, and individuals marginalized or stigmatized due to their social conditions. Through art, we challenge stereotypes, spark dialogue, and advocate for social and economic justice.

Position Overview

This position is funded through the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations program and is designed to provide emerging artists and cultural practitioners—particularly students from BIPOC communities—with professional development opportunities.

The Gallery Associate / Curatorial Assistant will work closely with the Director/Curator, gaining hands-on experience in curatorial research, archival management, artist relations, and program development. The role combines administrative, curatorial, and public engagement responsibilities in a collaborative, politically engaged environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct curatorial research for upcoming exhibitions under the guidance of the Director/Curator.

  • Research and interpret the gallery’s history through archival materials; develop accessible ways to share this research with the public.

  • Maintain, catalogue, and digitize the gallery’s archive.

  • Draft exhibition and program materials aligned with the gallery’s style guide.

  • Participate in studio visits, community events, and exhibition-related activities.

  • Support marketing efforts, including social media content creation and promotional material design.

  • Liaise with exhibiting artists to ensure smooth communication and collaboration.

  • Plan and coordinate programming and outreach events for concurrent exhibitions, liaising with artists and community members to foster engagement and participation.

  • Assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions.

  • Help plan and deliver public programs, tours, and events.

  • Welcome and engage with gallery visitors.

  • Contribute to the upkeep and organization of the gallery space.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution in any field of study (priority given to visual arts, literature, history, English, or communications students).

  • Eligible to work in Canada under British Columbia labour regulations.

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under Canadian law.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong research and writing abilities, with attention to accessibility and inclusivity.

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, Squarespace, and social media platforms.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Interest in archival work, community engagement, and the operations of non-profit arts organizations.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a creative, dynamic environment.

Priority will be given to applicants who self-identify as: Indigenous, Black, a person with a disability, a newcomer to Canada (within the last 5 years), a first-year student, a woman in the arts, a visible minority, or those who have not yet participated in YCW programs or are under/unemployed.
